A bold new generation of material
Louis De Poortere is committed to protecting the environment for future generations and so they have taken the important steps to craft a collection that is more sustainable and which sets their products on the path to circularity. With the Louis De Poortere Ecorugs all of their rug collections move to a mono-material polyester construction.
The move allows them to guarantee that their rugs are not only high quality, but also fully recyclable. It’s a bold new generation of environment friendly rugs that will help to preserve our planet while upholding their philosophy of creating beautiful rugs that bring the utmost pleasure & durability.
A fibre of the future
As a synthetic material, it can be recycled efficiently and infinitely, without compromising its quality throughout its life cycle.
Louis De Poortere is aware of the concerns associated with the production of virgin polyester derived from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. However, alongside the Take Care Program to make recycling a shared responsibility, their Ecorugs offer a move towards a sustainable solution by extending polyester’s useful life and reducing their demand on these resources.
Polyester has exceptional recycling properties and for every kilogram of polyester that Louis De Poortere recycles, they get one kilogram back. This means that there is no more waste and every gram of material is used efficiently. Additionally, with polyester’s exceptional durability, each rug possesses a long life, no matter how many times it finds a new home. Polyester is therefore truly to be considered the fibre of the future.
Why use polyester?
Historically, Louis De Poortere has used natural cotton within their rug collections. With the challenge to protect the natural world and provide a bright future for civilization, they rightly believe that is important to make sure that their products are more circular. Polyester offers them this opportunity through its long life and the ability to even convert used rugs into new rugs thanks to the recycling qualities of polyester.
Mono-material
Every part of their Ecorugs is made from polyester. By creating a 100% mono-material construction, Louis De Poortere eliminates the need to separate materials and make it easier to recycle Ecorugs at the end of their life.
Longer product life
In terms of durability, polyester fibres are stronger and more durable than cotton. In fact, they have compared the wear of the new Ecorugs with a cotton construction and found that cotton wears out at three times the speed under the same conditions of usage. The use of 100% polyester therefore means a considerable longer life for their rugs and a less frequent need for replacement.
Recyclability
Polyester is endlessly recyclable without degradation in quality, which offers Louis De Poortere the potential to adopt a fully circular product model in the future. Recycling polyester lets us extend the life of the materials that are used, which reduces the demand for new raw materials.
A life more circular
Louis De Poortere believes that closing the loop with a mono-material construction offers the best available option to lower their ecological footprint and that this is the very best opportunity to create a more circular life for your Louis de Poortere ecorug.
01. Eco Design
Louis De Poortere changed to a mono-material PET (Polyester) composition for all parts of the rug to improve recyclability and bring the production closer to closing the recycling loop.
02. Eco Production
50% of the energy consumed by Louis De Poortere comes from solar and other renewable energies and they are working to reduce consumption and move towards increasing their use of green sources. At the moment, 90% of their production waste is recycled with 33% made into felt underlay and 57% turned into energy bricks.
03. Distribution
Louis De Poortere provides a direct delivery service to the end-consumer via their dealer network which lets them lower transport emissions considerably compared to a classic shipping service that first goes to the retailer’s store or warehouse before shipping again to the end-consumer.
04. Use
With their Take Care Program, Louis De Poortere offers the best possible experience in caring for your rug, so that it provides you with its optimal best life.
05. Return
The Take Care Program by Louis De Poortere puts a QR code on every rug to organize a free return for recycling or reuse. This program offers a simple and practical solution to play your part in their commitment to a sustainable future for us all.
06. Recycling
Louis De Poortere is committed to refurbishing or recycling all rugs that are returned via their Take Care Program. The refurbished rugs can find a new home through second-hand sales and damaged rugs are processed back into polyester fibres.
07. Raw Materials
Currently the Ecorugs are made from 100% polyester (PET), 20% of which is already recycled material (rPET). It’s their objective to get a 100% recycled polyester through the rugs that are returned via their Take Care Program.
Take Care Program
The Take Care Program by Louis De Poortere serves as their commitment to jointly assume responsibility for prolonging the lifespan of your Ecorug and facilitating its recycling. The returns process is simplified with the Take Care Program and is an essential part of their ambition to enable a maximal recycling of their Ecorugs. This streamlined approach benefits you and empowers Louis De Poortere to oversee the entire recycling process.
The Take Care Program thus plays an integral part in their ambition to ensure that their Ecorugs enjoy a fully sustainable, circular life. More information on how to care for your Ecorug and/or return it for free at the end of its life cycle is available in the Take Care Program included with each Louis De Poortere Ecorug.
