Rug Sizing Tips For Any Space
Measuring for a Rug – Easily Find the Perfect Fit
When determining the appropriate rug dimensions for your living spaces, it is important to take into account the size of each individual room as well as the arrangement of furniture within that space. To begin, it is recommended to accurately measure both the room and the furniture. This initial step will allow you to select a suitable rug layout from the various options outlined below.
Let’s start by measuring the area you want to place your rug in. This step is crucial in choosing the right rug size for your space. We’re here to share some helpful tips that will make measuring for an area rug a breeze.
1. Start with the essentials
Before diving into rug shopping, grab a measurer and a notebook. It’s a good idea to record the measurements so you can easily refer back to them later.
2. Plan your layout
Take a moment to visualize how you want to arrange your furniture and rug in each room. Refer to the room-by-room layouts provided below for inspiration. Having a clear idea of your desired arrangement will help you select the appropriate rug size.
3. Measure strategically
Whether you’re measuring the entire room or just the seating area, take accurate measurements of the length and width of your living space. In open-concept spaces, it’s helpful to focus on specific zones, such as the seating or dining area.
4. Consider the details
Don’t forget to note any key details that could impact the rug’s placement. Take note of vents or doors that may affect how the rug lays. If there are doors involved, measure the space between the floor and the bottom of the door to ensure the rug won’t obstruct movement. Additionally, check the pile height of the rug to ensure it won’t interfere with the opening and closing of the door.
Living Room
Choosing the Right Size for Your Area Rug
Choosing the right size rug for your living room is important in creating a spacious and connected feel. Your living room shape should be the determining factor, rather than just the furniture. There are three main layouts to consider:
- All furniture legs on the rug,
- Only the front legs on the rug, or
- All furniture off the rug, except the coffee table which is placed on the rug.
If you opt for a layout where the sofa is on the rug, the ideally the rug extends at least 15 cm on each side for the perfect scale.
Choosing a rug that can accommodate your entire sofa is a great way to anchor your living room in an open-concept space or a furniture grouping that doesn’t have anything against the wall. By placing all your furniture fully on the rug, you can bring a sense of unity to the pieces and create a clear seating area.
If your furniture grouping is against a wall, you may not need to get a rug that covers the entire area. To create a cohesive look, opt for a rug size that allows for only the front legs of every piece of furniture to be on the rug.

Only front legs of the sofas placed on Columbus Gold 8419 rug in size 240 x 340 cm.

When it comes to small or narrow spaces, this layout cleverly manipulates the room’s scale, giving the illusion of a larger area. To achieve this, it’s vital to pay attention to the proportions. Instead of solely considering the coffee table, focus on the interior dimensions of your seating area. This way, the rug will fill the negative space left by your furniture grouping, creating a perfectly balanced look.
Dining Room
Choosing the Right Size for Your Dining Room Rug
Choosing the right shape for your rug depends on the layout of your room and the size & shape of your dining table.
We advise keeping all legs of the chairs on the rug to ensure maximum comfort. Make sure the rug extends at least 60 cm but no more than 90 cm beyond all sides of the table. This way, when chairs are pushed back, their legs keep sitting on a flat surface offered by the rug.

Bedroom
Choosing the Right Size for Your Bedroom Rug
Get ready to transform your bedroom into a cozy oasis with the right rug in the perfect size!
Picture this: you wake up in the morning, step out of bed, and your feet are greeted by a soft and stylish rug stroking your feet… Simply follow these rug sizing tips to create the perfect ambiance & feel in your bedroom.
When it comes to choosing the right size rug for your bedroom, there are a few things to consider. You’ll want your rug to extend beyond the bed, covering not just the area underneath but also reaching out to nightstands or a bench. However, it’s important to avoid having the rug extend to other walls where dressers might be placed.
To ensure a perfect fit, we recommend having your bedroom rug extend at least 45 cm to 60 cm past the edge of your bed.
It’s also a good idea to make sure the rug doesn’t obstruct any main walkways in the room. By following these simple tips, you’ll have a well-sized rug that enhances the overall look of your bedroom.
Choosing the right rug size for your bedroom can really make a difference in the overall look and feel of the space. One popular option to consider is framing your bed with a rug that doesn’t quite reach up to your nightstands, as illustrated in the second sample below. This allows for about 45 cm – 60 cm of space on the sides and past the foot of the bed, creating a balanced and stylish look.
For a symmetrical and finished appearance, it’s best to opt for specific rug sizes, depending on the size of your bed. If you have a queen bed, an 240 x 340 cm is ideal. This size provides enough coverage to frame the bed nicely. On the other hand, if you have a king-sized bed, a larger rug such as a rug in size 290 x 390 cm would mostly be the perfect fit.

Bed placed partially on the rug in size 240 x 340 cm.

Whether you have a small nook or a king-sized bed, this versatile option is perfect for any space. It’s especially great if your bed is against a wall. Remember, scale is important for this look. You want the runner to fit just right, not extending beyond the bed, but it should be a bit wider than your nightstand.
Entrance Hall
Choosing the Right Rug Size for Your Entrance Hall
When it comes to choosing the right size rug for your entrance hall, it’s important to let the shape of the space guide your decision. Depending on whether the space is round or rectangular you’ll want to select a round or rectangular rug, or possibly a runner rug which may also work well.
To ensure that the rug fits well within the space, it’s also helpful to use the width of your front door as a baseline for determining the width of the rug. This way, when the door is opened, it can easily pass over the rug without any issues.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to check the pile height of the rug to make sure that it doesn’t obstruct the movement of the door when it’s opened.
By considering these factors, you can choose a rug size that not only fits well within your space but also allows for smooth and hassle-free access.
Hallways / Corridors
Choosing the Right Runner Rug Size for Your Hallway
When it comes to corridors, runners are the ideal choice. It’s important to keep these narrow passageways clutter-free, so avoid placing furniture legs on the rug in this area. This will help maintain a sense of openness and prevent any obstacles from hindering movement.
